Introduction to embroidery using the sewing machine
There are two basic methods of working machine embroidery, with the presser foot in place or working in freestyle with a darning foot. Both methods can be worked on the majority of sewing machines, because generally only straight and zig-zag stitches are used. We will look at both methods for embroidery, and how different threads and different weights of fabrics will affect the embroidery.

3-lesson Embroidery class
Any type of embroidery involves changing the surface of a piece of fabric, sometimes to the extent of creating an entirely new one. Fabric can be changed through a variety of ways - stitching, distressing, folding, pleating, gathering, are just some techniques of fabric manipulation.
We shall look at methods of fabric manipulation by deconstruction and slashing in these sessions.  New techniques learnt can then be used in conjunction with other methods of embroidery to make a finished item of your choice eg panel for a wallhanging, cushion or other interior decoration, fashion garment or piece of textile art.
Sessions are suitable for the beginner through to the experienced enthusiast; each student will work at their own individual pace.

Wednesday 4th, 11th & 18th July 2012,

We will look at embellishment through fabric manipulation. There are many ways to manipulate fabrics, in this workshop we will look at tucks, gathers, folds and pleating using both the sewing machine and hand stitch.

Adhesive webbing - Bondaweb
Commercially known as Bondaweb, adhesive webbing is a delicate weblike film of adhesive on a non-stick paper backing. It is popularly used in the technique of applique. Bondaweb has exciting possibilities in its uses for creating interesting surfaces for embroidery. Fine chiffons and other sheers can be used to "sandwich" or trap using bondaweb. In this workshop we will use paints, Angelina fibres, threads and fibres, fabric scaps and lace scraps to make fabrics which can be used on their own or can be incorporated into other embroidery work.
