3-lesson Felt class
Tutor: Gill Dearman
Felt is probably one of the oldest known textiles. Its uses are both tradional and contemporary. The use of felt is as wide as the creative user wants it to be. Felted pieces can stand alone as art pieces or as fashion wear eg felt bags, felt slippers, or interior design pieces eg felt cushios, felt cen be used in conjunction with fabrics eg scarves. Felt also makes a wonderful surface to stitch into for the embroiderer.
We will be looking into the process of making hand rolled flat felt in these sessions, for althought water, heat soap and friction are all that is needed to make felt, understanding each process enables you to have control over the results. In these sessions we will look at making various thicknesses of felt from very thick to very fine cob-web felt, and how the combining of other fibres, yarns and fabrics with the felt will change the finished appearance and texture of the piece of felt. By sampling these techniques you can decide which types of technique you wish to pursue for a finished item.
All sessions are suitable for the beginner through to the experienced enthusiast; each student will work at their own individual pace.
