Gardens

Dutch house Ecological sculpture garden is designed by Sjaak Kastelijn, Gardens manager of the York museum Gardens. The garden is set on
a 1.6 acre site with lovely views to the surrounding fields and the hilltop
village of Crayke. The River Foss meanders through the site. Because of its natural setting in a rural area and so close to the river the garden is a haven for wildlife. The garden is an important element in the cohesion between
art and nature, and an educational opportunity for visitors to learn more about sustainable gardening and gardening to increase wildlife and biodiversity.

The garden is divided into five different segments; Landscape Garden, wildflower meadow and children's adventure zone, herbaceous/herb borders and a vegetable/ scented garden.

Landscape garden
The landscape garden has a park landscape style integrating with the existing surrounding by using native trees and shrubs, different levels of height through carefully shaped earth mounts. This segment of the garden has an open feel with different views to the surrounding field. The tone of this garden is peaceful and
therefore provides a perfect backdrop for exciting sculpture. The landscape garden
has a collection of trees all of which are native to the UK.

Wildflower meadow and Kids Nature Zone
This lovely area is seeded with native wildflower seeds and a splash of colour and wildlife through out the summer. Set along side the river Foss the meadow is the feeding station for bees, insects and birds. The wildflower meadow is part of Dutch house courses and provides the opportunity for you to learn how to seed and maintain a meadow at home. The Kid's nature zone is an exploring area for kids to play, discover and experience nature. The kid's nature zone contains willow tunnels, tree house, sand pit. From 2012 this area will be planted with a fine collection of old Yorkshire apple and pear varieties.
